Control Surfaces PDF Print E-mail

Ailerons: Are the movable surfaces at the outer trailing edged of each wing controlled by pulleys and wires connected to the yoke and control movement about the longitudinal axis or your rolling movement.

Flaps: Are the movable surfaces at the trailing edged of each wing closest to the cockpit controlled by electric motor and pushrod. Flaps change the chamber of the wing which allows more lift and lower speeds.

Elevators: The elevators control the movement of the airplane about its lateral axis or the pitch. The elevators are the movable surfaces on the trailing edged of the horizontal tail assembly and are connected to the yoke by pulleys and wires.

Rudder: The rudder controls movement of the airplane about its vertical axis or the yaw. This is the movable surface on the trailing edged of the vertical stabilizer. This is controlled by pulleys and wires attached to the rudder pedals.

Trim Tabs: A trim tab is a small, adjustable surface that allows for fine tuning to achieve straight and level flight. Elevator trim is standard on all aircraft. Once you get into higher performance aircraft you start seeing rudder trim.
